Tourism & Visiting Family/Friends Visa – Iceland

Overview

Schengen Visa is required for non-UK citizens residing in the UK who wish to travel to Iceland for tourism, visiting family or friends, attending events, medical treatment, or other short-term purposes. This visa permits a short stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period in Iceland and other Schengen countries.

You will need to apply for an Iceland Schengen Visa if you:

  • Are a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen residing in the UK and require a visa to enter the Schengen Area.
  • Plan to visit Iceland for one of the following purposes:
    • Tourism – Leisure, sightseeing, holiday travel.
    • Visiting Family & Friends – Staying with relatives or close contacts in Iceland.
    • Other – Sports or cultural events, medical treatment, short-term studies, or official visits.
  • Do not hold a valid multiple-entry Schengen visa issued by another Schengen country.
  • Are self-funding your trip or have sponsorship for accommodation and expenses.

Eligibility

To apply for an Iceland Schengen Visa for Tourism, Visiting Family/Friends, or Other Categories, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Hold a valid passport/travel document meeting Schengen visa requirements (issued within the last 10 years, with at least 3 months validity beyond the departure date).
  • Hold a valid UK residency permit. (C-Type short-stay visas for the UK are not accepted).
  • Intend to leave Iceland and the Schengen Area before your visa expires.
  • Meet Iceland’s entry conditions based on your visa category.

Children traveling as part of a school trip and nationals of countries requiring a Schengen visa must obtain a visa before travel.

Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the travel date.
  • The minimum processing time is 15 days, but delays may occur due to consultation requirements or peak season demand.
  • Applicants are encouraged to book appointments in advance, particularly around Easter, Summer holidays (July & August), and Christmas.
  • Additional documents or interviews may be requested, which could extend processing times.

Documents Required

Common Documents

Travel Document

  • valid passport issued within the last 10 years with at least two blank pages.
  • Must be valid for at least three months beyond the departure date from the Schengen area.
  • Copies of previous passports containing valid or expired Schengen visas (if applicable).

Schengen Visa Application Form

  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form.
  • Confirmation of online visa registration at the Icelandic visa portal.

Passport Photograph

  • One recent passport-size photograph (max. 6 months old).
  • White background, 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Proof of Finance

  • Personal UK bank statement (last 3 months), showing sufficient funds for the trip.
  • If sponsored, a signed sponsorship letter with the sponsor’s financial proof.
  • Minimum funds required:
    • 8,000 ISK per day for hotel stays.
    • 4,000 ISK per day if staying with a sponsor.

Proof of Travel

  • Confirmed round-trip flight booking with valid PNR number and applicant’s name.
  • If visiting multiple Schengen countries, proof of intra-Schengen travel (flights, train bookings, car rental).

Travel Medical Insurance

  • Must be valid for all Schengen countries.
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000, including:
    • Medical emergencies, accidents, and repatriation.
    • The entire duration of travel, including arrival and departure dates.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Confirmed hotel booking, rental agreement, or campus residence reservation.
  • If staying with family or friends, a formal invitation letter from the host in Iceland along with the hosts ID document & Proof of address.

Proof of Employment/Studies (if applicable, not older than 30 days)

  • Employed:
    • Recent official employment letter from employer (with salary, job title, and leave approval).
    • Last 3 months’ payslips.
  • Self-Employed:
    • Letter from an accountant, bank, or solicitor confirming business registration and income.
    • Latest self-assessment tax return.
  • Students:
    • Official letter from school/university confirming enrollment, study program, and attendance record.
  • Retired:
    • Pension statements (last 3 months) or proof of other regular income.
  • Unemployed:
    • Proof of sponsorship or financial means.

For Minors (Under 18 Years Old)

  • Birth certificate copy.
  • Parental consent (if traveling alone or with only one parent):
    • Notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s).
    • Copies of both parents’ passports or ID documents.

Additional Documents for Specific Visa Categories

Tourism Visa

  • Proof of accommodation (hotel booking, Airbnb reservation, or tour package confirmation).
  • If part of a school trip, ensure compliance with visa requirements for minors.

Visiting Family & Friends Visa

  • Invitation letter from the host in Iceland.
  • Copy of the host’s passport or residence permit.
  • Proof of family relationship (if applicable).

Other Visa Categories (Special Events, Cultural, Sports, Medical Treatment, etc.)

  • Relevant event registration, medical certificates, or special invitation letters.
  • Documentation proving the purpose of the visit.

Important Notes:

  • Ensure all documents are complete and accurate to avoid processing delays.
  • The Embassy may request additional documents or call for an interview.
  • Peak season processing times may be longer, so early application is advised.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

  • Background: Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clarity & Focus: The photo must be of high quality, clear, and in sharp focus.
  • Full Face Visible:
    • The applicant must have a neutral expression (non-smiling).
    • No sunglasses, hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Printing Requirements:
    • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
    • Must be glued to the visa application form (not stapled).
  • Compliance Check:
    • If the submitted photograph does not meet the above requirements, the application will be considered incomplete.
    • The applicant may be required to take new photographs at a photo booth in the visa application centre.
