Sports, Study, and Cultural Visa – Iceland

Overview

This Schengen Visa is required for non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens residing in the UK who wish to travel to Iceland for:

  • Sports – Athletes, coaches, or team members participating in competitions, training, or sporting events.
  • Study – Short-term students attending academic courses, school exchanges, or research programs.
  • Cultural – Artists, performers, and participants in cultural festivals, exhibitions, or creative projects.

School Groups & Minors:

  • Children travelling as part of a school trip must obtain a Schengen Visa if they are nationals of a country requiring a visa.
  • Minors travelling alone must provide parental consent documents.

Eligibility

To apply for a Sports, Study, and Cultural Visa, the applicant must:

  • Be a non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizen residing in the UK.
  • Hold a valid passport/travel document meeting Schengen visa requirements.
  • Hold a valid UK residency permit (C-Type short-stay visas for the UK are not accepted).
  • Provide an official invitation from an Icelandic institution, school, or event organizer.

Processing Time

  • Applications can be submitted up to 6 months before the travel date.
  • The minimum processing time is 15 days, but delays may occur due to consultation requirements.
  • Peak seasons (Easter, summer, Christmas) may cause longer waiting times for appointments.
  • The Embassy may request additional documents or an interview, which could extend processing times.

Documents Required

Travel Document

  • valid passport issued within the last 10 years with at least two blank pages.
  • Must be valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date from the Schengen area.
  • Copies of previous passports containing valid or expired Schengen visas (if applicable).

Schengen Visa Application Form

  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form.
  • Confirmation of online visa registration at the Icelandic visa portal.

Passport Photograph

  • One recent passport-size photograph (max. 6 months old).
  • White background, 3.5 x 4.5 cm in size.

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Covering Letter

  • covering letter from the UK school, sports club, or cultural organisation, stating:
    • Name of the applicant.
    • Purpose of visit.
    • Duration of stay.
    • Sponsorship details (who is covering travel, lodging, and expenses).
    • Names and addresses of institutions or events in Iceland.

Invitation Letter

  • signed invitation letter from the Icelandic institution, sports club, or cultural event organiser detailing:
    • Purpose of visit.
    • Duration of stay.
    • Sponsorship details.

Proof of Employment, Study, or Sponsorship

  • If Employed:
    • Employer’s letter confirming employment status and leave approval.
    • Three recent payslips.
  • If Self-Employed:
    • Letter from a solicitor, accountant, or Companies House confirming business ownership.
  • If Student:
    • Letter from school/university confirming enrolment and study details.
  • If Sponsored:
    • Sponsorship letter with financial guarantee.

Travel Medical Insurance

  • Valid for all Schengen countries.
  • Minimum coverage of €30,000 for medical expenses, accidents, and repatriation.

Proof of Transport

  • Confirmed flight reservation (return ticket).
  • Internal travel reservations (if applicable).

Proof of Accommodation

  • Hotel booking, rental agreement, or campus housing confirmation.
  • If staying with friends or family, a formal invitation letter from the host in Iceland.

Proof of Finance

  • Last 3 months of UK bank statements, showing sufficient funds for the trip.
  • If sponsored, a sponsorship letter and sponsor’s bank statement.

For Minors (Under 18 Years)

  • Original birth certificate + photocopy.
  • Parental consent form signed by both parents/guardians.
  • Copies of parents’ passports.

Important Notes:

  • Ensure all documents are complete and accurate to avoid processing delays.
  • The Embassy may request additional documents or call for an interview.
  • Processing delays are possible during peak seasons, so early application is recommended.

 Photo Specifications

 Applicants must submit one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

  • Background: Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clarity & Focus: The photo must be of high quality, clear, and in sharp focus.
  • Full Face Visible:
    • The applicant must have a neutral expression (non-smiling).
    • No sunglasses, hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Printing Requirements:
    • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
    • Must be glued to the visa application form (not stapled).
  • Compliance Check:
    • If the submitted photograph does not meet the above requirements, the application will be considered incomplete.
    • The applicant may be required to take new photographs at a photo booth in the visa application centre.
