Digital Nomad Visa – Iceland

Overview

The Digital Nomad Visa allows remote workers to stay in Iceland for up to 180 days while continuing their employment with a foreign company or operating as self-employed individuals. This visa is designed for those who can work remotely using digital technology and are not seeking local employment in Iceland.

Spouses, cohabiting partners, and children under 18 may also apply for a long-term visa as family members of the remote worker.

Eligibility

To qualify for this visa, you must:

  • Be a non-EEA/EFTA citizen.
  • Not require a visa to enter the Schengen area.
  • Not have been issued a long-term visa by Icelandic authorities in the past 12 months.
  • Be employed by a foreign company or be self-employed outside Iceland.
  • Not intend to settle in Iceland.
  • Have a verifiable foreign income of at least:
    • ISK 1,000,000 per month for single applicants.
    • ISK 1,300,000 per month if applying with a spouse or cohabiting partner.
  • Spouses, cohabiting partners, and children may apply if they are exempt from visa requirements.

Visa Duration & Validity

  • If you apply from outside Iceland, the visa can be issued for up to 180 days.
  • If you apply after entering the Schengen area, the visa is limited to 90 days.
  • Holders of this visa cannot work for an Icelandic employer or participate in the local labor market.
  • This visa does not grant an Icelandic ID number (kennitala).

Processing Time

  • Processing Time: Varies—check with the Directorate of Immigration for current timelines.
  • Application Submission:
    • By mail to the Directorate of Immigration in Iceland.
    • Drop-box submission at the Directorate’s office.
    • In-person submission at District Commissioners’ offices outside Reykjavík.

Documents Required

For the Digital Nomad Applicant:

  • Completed application form (signed and dated).
  • Payment receipt for the processing fee.
  • Valid passport (copies of personal details page, signature page, visas, and entry/exit stamps from the past 12 months).
  • Passport photo (35×45 mm, not older than 6 months).
  • Health insurance certificate, covering the duration of stay in Iceland and valid for at least 6 months.
  • Proof of employment or self-employment, including:
    • confirmation letter from your employer stating your job role, remote work approval, and salary details, OR
    • contract for projects (for self-employed applicants) detailing the work scope and payment structure.
  • Proof of financial means, such as:
    • Employment contract showing a monthly salary of ISK 1,000,000 (ISK 1,300,000 if applying with a spouse).
    • Bank statements or tax returns as additional proof of income.
  • If requested, a criminal record certificate from your country of residence.

For the Spouse/Cohabiting Partner:

  • Completed application form (separate form required).
  • Payment receipt for the processing fee.
  • Valid passport (copies of personal details page, signature page, visas, and entry/exit stamps from the past 12 months).
  • Passport photo (35×45 mm, not older than 6 months).
  • Health insurance certificate, valid for the stay.
  • Marriage certificate or proof of cohabitation for at least one year.
  • Legal confirmation of documents may be required by the Directorate of Immigration.

For the Child (Under 18):

  • Completed application form (separate form required).
  • Payment receipt for the processing fee.
  • Valid passport (copies of personal details page, signature page, visas, and entry/exit stamps from the past 12 months).
  • Passport photo (35×45 mm, not older than 6 months).
  • Health insurance certificate, valid for the stay.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Custody documents, if applicable:
    • Official custody documentsdivorce papers, or death certificate (if one parent is deceased).
    • notarized statement from the non-accompanying parent confirming consent for the child’s stay in Iceland.
  • Education documents for children aged 6-16, confirming:
    • Remote schooling from home country, OR
    • Enrollment in an Icelandic school, OR
    • Home-schooling or tutoring arrangements.

Application Process

  1. Gather all required documents, ensuring they meet the Directorate of Immigration’s requirements.
  2. Pay the processing fee via bank transfer and attach the payment receipt.
  3. Submit the application:
    • By mail to the Directorate of Immigration in Iceland.
    • Drop-box submission at the Directorate’s office.
    • In-person submission at District Commissioners’ offices outside Reykjavík.
  4. Await confirmation—if approved, you will receive a notification from the Directorate of Immigration.
  5. After arrival in Iceland, contact the Directorate of Immigration to finalize the visa issuance.

Important Notes

  • Visa holders cannot apply for permanent residency in Iceland.
  • Working for an Icelandic employer is strictly prohibited—this visa is only for remote work for a foreign company.
  • If documents are incomplete, processing may be delayed or rejected.
  • Spouses, partners, and children must apply separately and provide proof of relationship.
  • The visa will be valid from the date of issue, so contact immigration authorities upon arrival in Iceland.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

  • Background: Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clarity & Focus: The photo must be of high quality, clear, and in sharp focus.
  • Full Face Visible:
    • The applicant must have a neutral expression (non-smiling).
    • No sunglasses, hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Printing Requirements:
    • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
    • Must be glued to the visa application form (not stapled).
  • Compliance Check:
    • If the submitted photograph does not meet the above requirements, the application will be considered incomplete.
    • The applicant may be required to take new photographs at a photo booth in the visa application centre.
