Overview

The Iceland Student Residence Permit allows non-EEA (European Economic Area) nationals to reside in Iceland for the purpose of full-time studies. This permit is granted to students admitted to recognized academic institutions, postgraduate students conducting research in collaboration with Icelandic universities, exchange students, and interns whose work placement is part of their academic program.

Who Can Apply?

The student residence permit is available for:

  • Full-time students enrolled at a recognized university in Iceland.
  • Postgraduate (doctoral) students from foreign universities collaborating with an Icelandic institution.
  • Exchange students participating in recognized student exchange programs.
  • Interns undertaking a work placement as part of their university studies abroad.
  • Technical and vocational students enrolled in higher-education workplace studies.
  • Graduates seeking employment after completing studies.

Who Cannot Apply?

Student residence permits are not issued for:

  • Studies at Icelandic secondary schools, except for approved exchange programs.
  • Courses in the Icelandic language that are not part of a formal study program.
  • Students at foreign universities who wish to stay in Iceland without a formal collaboration agreement.

Application Deadlines

To ensure timely processing, applications must be submitted well in advance:

  • Fall Semester – Apply by June 1st.
  • Spring Semester – Apply by November 1st.

Late applications may not be processed in time for the start of the semester.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for a student residence permit, applicants must:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Have an admission letter from a recognized Icelandic educational institution.
  • Be enrolled in full-time studies (minimum 30 ECTS per semester).
  • Have sufficient financial means to support themselves.
  • Hold valid health insurance covering their stay in Iceland.
  • Provide a criminal record certificate from their country of residence.
  • Hold a passport valid for at least 90 days beyond the permit duration.

Postgraduate students collaborating with Icelandic universities must provide proof of their research agreement.

Interns must demonstrate that their internship is an official part of their studies abroad.

Processing Time

Processing times may vary based on application volume and documentation completeness.

  • Applications submitted with missing documents will be delayed or rejected.
  • The Icelandic Directorate of Immigration may request additional documents if needed.

Documents Required

Application Forms & Payment Receipt

  • Completed student residence permit application form.
  • Proof of payment for the residence permit processing fee.

Identity and Travel Documents

  • Passport copy (must be valid for at least 90 days beyond the permit duration).
  • Recent passport-sized photo (35×45 mm).

Criminal Record Certificate

  • Issued by the highest authority in the applicant’s country of residence.
  • Not older than 12 months at the time of submission.
  • Must be translated into English, Icelandic, or a Nordic language if originally in another language.

Health Insurance Confirmation

  • Insurance must be valid in Iceland for at least six months from the applicant’s date of registration.
  • Minimum coverage of ISK 2,000,000.

Proof of Financial Means

Applicants must demonstrate sufficient financial resources to cover their stay in Iceland through one of the following:

  • Bank statement (original format, issued and verified by a bank).
  • Study grant or scholarship confirmation (if applicable).
  • Employment contract (if the applicant is working in Iceland).

Minimum Financial Requirement

  • ISK 247,572 per month for individuals.
  • ISK 396,115 per month for married couples.
  • ISK 123,786 per month for each additional family member (18 years or older).

Unsupported Financial Sources:

The following are not accepted as proof of financial means:

  • Cash payments.
  • Assets such as real estate or stocks.
  • Third-party financial support (except from spouses residing in Iceland).

Confirmation of Studies

  • Official admission letter from the university.
  • Proof of enrolment in full-time studies (minimum 30 ECTS per semester).

Internship Documentation (If Applicable)

  • Internship contract between the student, Icelandic company, and home university.
  • Confirmation that the internship is part of the academic program.
  • Temporary work permit issued by the Directorate of Labour.

Special Requirements for Specific Student Categories

Postgraduate Students (Doctoral Research in Collaboration with Icelandic Universities)

  • Research agreement between the foreign and Icelandic university.
  • If receiving a salary, a work permit application may be required.

Exchange Students

  • Official confirmation from an acknowledged exchange-student organization (e.g., AFS, Rotary).
  • May be exempt from age limitations.

Interns

  • Internship must be part of an academic program at a foreign university.
  • Requires temporary work permit approval.

Additional Notes

  • Student residence permits do not grant work rights unless explicitly stated.
  • A new application must be submitted for permit extensions before expiry.
  • The residence permit does not lead to permanent residency in Iceland.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

  • Background: Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clarity & Focus: The photo must be of high quality, clear, and in sharp focus.
  • Full Face Visible:
    • The applicant must have a neutral expression (non-smiling).
    • No sunglasses, hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Printing Requirements:
    • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
    • Must be glued to the visa application form (not stapled).
  • Compliance Check:
    • If the submitted photograph does not meet the above requirements, the application will be considered incomplete.
    • The applicant may be required to take new photographs at a photo booth in the visa application centre.
