Volunteer Work Visa – Iceland

Overview

The Volunteer Work Residence Permit allows individuals to stay in Iceland while working with a non-governmental organization (NGO) engaged in charitable or humanitarian work on a non-profit and tax-exempt basis. This permit is available for those 18 years or older who have an invitation from a recognized organization and can support themselves during their stay.

Eligibility

To qualify for this permit, you must:

  • Be 18 years or older at the time of application.
  • Have a valid invitation from a recognized charitable or humanitarian NGO operating on a non-profit and tax-exempt basis.
  • Ensure your work aligns with the organization’s charitable or humanitarian mission.
  • Demonstrate financial means to support yourself during your stay without relying on employment income in Iceland.
  • Provide health insurance valid in Iceland.
  • Not have any criminal record that would restrict your entry into Iceland.

Important Note:

Unpaid work in restaurants, guesthouses, farms, or tourism-related businesses does not qualify as volunteer work under this permit.

Processing Time & Application Deadline

  • Processing Fee: ISK 16,000 (non-refundable).
  • Processing Time: Varies—check the Directorate of Immigration for updates.
  • Application Submission:
    • Must be submitted before arriving in Iceland if you need a visa.
    • Those not requiring a visa may submit their application while in Iceland, provided their Schengen stay does not exceed 90 days within 180 days.

Documents Required

For the Applicant:

  • Completed application form (signed and dated).
  • Payment receipt for the processing fee.
  • Valid passport (copy of personal details page and signature page).
  • Passport photo (35×45 mm).
  • Criminal record certificate, issued by the highest competent authority in the country of residence (must not be older than 12 months).
  • Health insurance certificate, covering a minimum of ISK 2,000,000, valid for at least six months from the date of residency registration.
  • Proof of financial support, including:
    • Bank statement showing sufficient funds for the duration of stay.
    • Scholarship or grants confirmation, if applicable.

For the NGO:

  • Signed contract with the NGO, including:
    • Type of work to be performed.
    • Duration of the volunteer placement.
    • Confirmation of financial support and housing arrangements, if applicable.
  • Proof of the NGO’s registration as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization.

Additional Requirements:

  • Return flight ticket showing departure at the end of the stay.
  • Power of Attorney (if someone else is handling the application).

Key Conditions for Volunteers

  • Must work for a recognized NGO operating in Iceland for charitable or humanitarian purposes.
  • No salary or employment rights—volunteers cannot engage in paid work during their stay.
  • Must reside in housing provided by the NGO or have independent housing arrangements.
  • Permit holders are not eligible for permanent residence based on this permit.

Financial Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate secure means of support for the entire stay:

The following do not qualify as proof of financial means:

  • Social assistance from Icelandic state/municipalities (except housing benefits).
  • Third-party financial support (except scholarships/grants).
  • Real estate, dividends, or other non-liquid assets.
  • Cash holdings without proof of legitimate source.

Health Insurance

  • Must be valid in Iceland for at least six months from the date of residence registration.
  • Minimum coverage required: ISK 2,000,000.
  • After six months of residence, volunteers may qualify for Iceland’s national health insurance.

Criminal Record Requirements

  • No prison sentence abroad in the past five years for offenses that would carry more than three months’ imprisonment in Iceland.
  • No criminal convictions in Iceland for offenses carrying more than three months’ imprisonment.
  • Must provide a criminal record certificate from the country of residence.

Important Notes

  • If you require a visa, you must apply from outside Iceland.
  • If you do not require a visa, you may stay in Iceland while your application is processed, provided your Schengen stay does not exceed 90 days in a 180-day period.
  • If documents are incomplete, the application may be delayed or rejected.
  • Additional documents may be requested if deemed necessary.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

  • Background: Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clarity & Focus: The photo must be of high quality, clear, and in sharp focus.
  • Full Face Visible:
    • The applicant must have a neutral expression (non-smiling).
    • No sunglasses, hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Printing Requirements:
    • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
    • Must be glued to the visa application form (not stapled).
  • Compliance Check:
    • If the submitted photograph does not meet the above requirements, the application will be considered incomplete.
    • The applicant may be required to take new photographs at a photo booth in the visa application centre.
