Family Reunification Visa – Iceland

Overview

The Family Reunification Visa allows family members of individuals residing in Iceland to apply for a residence permit to join them. Different categories of family reunification permits are available based on the applicant’s relationship with the resident in Iceland.

This visa applies to:

  • Spouses and Cohabiting Partners of residents in Iceland.
  • Children under 18 years reuniting with their parents.
  • Parents aged 67 and above who are financially dependent on their child in Iceland.
  • Parents of children younger than 18 residing in Iceland.
  • Children born in Iceland requiring a residence permit.

Note: If the sponsor in Iceland is a citizen of an EEA/EFTA state, family members should apply for a residence card for family members of an EEA/EFTA citizen instead.

Documents Required

Residence Permit for Spouse

Residence Permit for a Spouse allows an individual to move to Iceland to live with their marital or cohabiting partner who has the right to reside in Iceland.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted in paper form either by mail or in person at the Directorate of Immigrationor District Commissioners’ offices outside the capital.
  • The processing fee (16,000 ISK) must be paid before submission, and proof of payment must be included.

Basic Requirements

  • Valid Passport (at least 90 days beyond the permit validity).
  • Secure Means of Support
    • Minimum 247,572 ISK per month for an individual.
    • 396,115 ISK per month for married couples.
    • 123,786 ISK per month for additional family members (18+).
  • Health Insurance covering at least 2,000,000 ISK for six months.
  • Criminal Record Certificate (not older than 12 months).

Special Requirements

  • The applicant must be 18 years or older.
  • The applicant must live with their spouse in Iceland.
  • Cohabiting spouses must prove at least one year of living together before applying.

Documents Required

  • Marriage Certificate / Cohabitation Proof (Apostille or legally authenticated).
  • Proof of Spouse’s Legal Status in Iceland (residency documents).
  • Consent from Spouse allowing the applicant to join them in Iceland.

Residence Permit for Children

Residence Permit for Children is for minors under 18 years who want to reunite with a parent residing in Iceland.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted in paper form by mail or in person.
  • Processing Fee: 16,000 ISK (non-refundable).

Requirements

  • Valid Passport
  • Birth Certificate (Apostille or legally authenticated).
  • Proof of Custody (if parents are divorced).
  • Consent of the Other Parent (if both parents have custody).
  • Secure Means of Support – Covered by the parent.
  • Health Insurance (if the parent has lived in Iceland for less than six months).

Residence Permit for Parents (67+)

This permit is for parents aged 67 or older who wish to join their adult child residing in Iceland.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted in paper form.
  • Processing Fee: 16,000 ISK (non-refundable).

Basic Requirements

  • Valid Passport
  • Proof of Relationship – Birth certificate of the child in Iceland.
  • Secure Means of Support – Financial support provided by the child in Iceland.
  • Health Insurance covering at least 2,000,000 ISK for six months.
  • Criminal Record Certificate (not older than 12 months).

Residence Permit for Parents of Children Younger than 18

This permit is for parents of minor children who reside in Iceland and need to reunite with them.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted in paper form.
  • Processing Fee: 16,000 ISK (non-refundable).

Requirements

  • Valid Passport
  • Birth Certificate of the Child
  • Proof of Custody (if applicable).
  • Secure Means of Support – Parent must demonstrate financial stability.
  • Health Insurance covering at least 2,000,000 ISK for six months.

Residence Permit for Children Born in Iceland

A residence permit is required for children born in Iceland who do not automatically acquire Icelandic citizenship.

Application Process

  • Applications must be submitted in paper form.
  • Processing Fee: 16,000 ISK (non-refundable).

Requirements

  • Birth Certificate (Icelandic-issued).
  • Valid Passport (if available).
  • Proof of Parents’ Legal Residency in Iceland.
  • Health Insurance – Covered by parents.

Photo Specifications

Applicants must submit one recent colour photograph (not older than 6 months) that meets the following requirements:

  • Background: Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (white or off-white) to ensure facial features are clearly distinguishable and contrast against the background.
  • Clarity & Focus: The photo must be of high quality, clear, and in sharp focus.
  • Full Face Visible:
    • The applicant must have a neutral expression (non-smiling).
    • No sunglasses, hats, caps, or head coverings, unless worn for religious or cultural reasons.
  • Printing Requirements:
    • Printed on standard photographic paper (camera print).
    • Must be glued to the visa application form (not stapled).
  • Compliance Check:
    • If the submitted photograph does not meet the above requirements, the application will be considered incomplete.
    • The applicant may be required to take new photographs at a photo booth in the visa application centre.
